Design For Apartment Living

Filed under: Design — ThisGirl @ 11:17 am

My son came home last week, and we spent these last few days looking for an apartment that would suit his needs.  We eventually found one, but I would have to say that I found this task extremely depressing.  I had forgotten what it was like to live in an apartment.  I am design challenged, so I was  having difficulty imagining what Billy could do to turn this apartment into a welcoming home.  Imagine my delight when I stumbled over these websites and blogs that turn apartment style living into your average design challenge.  So Billy ….  This post is for you.

I just listened to a rather interesting video podcast.  I just finished listening to the episode, “What Are The Worst Design Mistakes.”  This particular episode focused on common home design mistakes.  Common mistakes they discussed were McMansion building craze, fake shutters, sliding mirrored and bi-fold closet doors, fake flooring and porcelain tile, molding no-no’s, and furniture supersized for the scale of the room.  I was particularly interested in hearing how the 2 designers felt about the fake flooring because I installed laminate flooring in a small bedroom last year, and have been very dissatisfied with the result, ever since.  http://www.design2share.com/

Episode 10 – Flatscreen Televisions, New Refrigerators and the Challenges of Renovation

Filed under: Podcasts — ThisGirl @ 3:33 pm

In this episode, I talk about the purchase and placement of a flatscreen television, replacing a refrigerator, the challenges of renovation and some podcasts that I’ve recently listened to.  Length: 43:38. Published 03/18/08. Podcast

Steve and the New TVFlatscreen on SideboardFlatscreen TV’s.  In the last episode, I believe that I mentioned that we would be purchasing a flatscreen television.  Well, we did purchase the Panasonic 58″ inch television from COSTCO.  It was not exactly the same model mentioned in the Consumer Reports, but we were nevertheless satisfied with our purchase. Stevie asked for help from his son unpackaging it and placing it on a sideboard in the living room.  Speaking of sideboards, we borrowed one from the dining room because we decided that we would not install it on our wall.  Furthermore, this was not the television’s final destination.  We purchased another used sideboard, so we could cut out parts of the back, and eventually placed that under the television instead.  Stevie anticipates that sideboards will be very very hard to find within the next year.

refrigerator1.jpgPurchasing a New Refrigerator:  How long should an appliance last?  Until I’m dead, would be my answer, for as much as you have to pay for the things.  Unfortunately, this is not the case.  I read an interesting article about how long appliances should last:

Minneapolis Star Tribune - http://www.startribune.com/lifestyle/homegarden/11311611.html

So I’m destined to be disillusioned.  Furthermore, roughly 14 years ago, I basically bought all new appliances because we moved from overseas.  As it turns out, many of the appliances are pretty worn out by now, if they have not already worn out.  I had to replace my refrigerator.  In doing some background research, I found this site called consumersearch.com, and they wrote a pretty comprehensive review on refrigerators.  I ended up getting a refrigerator, not on this list, because I found a deal at the Sears Outlet.  It’s a GE Profile 26 cubic feet side by side, not my first choice, but who could turn down the $699 price tag.

BTW:  Did you know that stainless steel refrigerators of a certain quality, are not magnetic.  So there goes my refrigerator magnet collection.

Miscellaneous: Putting off projects.  Renovate while living with the mess.  Spring is coming.  Bulbs have come up.  Time to get out there to clean up plants that have died over the winter and pick up brush.  Podcasts I’ve listened to lately.

In Praise Of A Single Story Home

Filed under: Building — ThisGirl @ 6:52 pm

This past week I’ve been sick with the flu, and my voice is nearly gone (so that’s my excuse for not doing this week’s podcast).  By the time, I walked into the doctor’s office, I was moving like an old woman.  At the time, I was reminded once again how glad I was to have made the decision to build a single story home.  Sure I could have had a much larger home built, had I chosen to build 2 stories, but all I could think about was how many people I knew who found themselves forced to move as they got older, because they didn’t have a first floor bedroom or bathroom.   I know younger people with children who have changed their homes because it’s really inconvenient having to go up and down stairs all day.  You know it’s a true inconvenience, when you start to see care packages lining the steps leading upstairs.  You know the things that belong upstairs, but that you’re not actually ready to carry upstairs.

I’ve read that single story homes are once more in fashion.  In a recent episode of “My House Is Worth What”, they took off price points from a couple who didn’t have a first floor master, because those were the only kind of houses moving in that neighborhood.  That couple actually lost money in the 3 years that they had own their home.  That’s right.  In today’s realitor market, homes that don’t have a first floor master are much much harder to move.  So if you’re thinking about building or even buying a home, think ahead to the time when you don’t have the energy or the strength to climb stairs.  If you’re a day over 40, it’s a consideration.

A Broken Refrigerator

Filed under: Home Improvement — ThisGirl @ 10:55 am

My Whirlpool Refrigerator is kaput.  I bought brand new 10 years ago, so I guess I can’t expect anything better, but I do.  What happened to buying appliances for life?  :-)   Of course I’m replacing it with stainless steel.  We mean to renovate the kitchen within the next 2 or 3 years and we would be putting stainless steel in anyway.  It’s funny how stainless steel is like the gold standard for upgraded appliances.  I’ll look at this event in a positive light.  This a kitchen renovation expense that we can take care of now.
